Seeing ice packed on the freezer back wall is not a normal no-frost refrigerator. Thick frost on the evaporator cover usually means the defrost system has stopped working.
A failed defrost heater, temperature sensor, or control board lets ice seal the coils. Airflow drops, the freezer fills with frost, and the fresh-food section starts to warm. Do not chip the ice with a knife or heat it with a hair dryer. That can puncture the liner or evaporator and turn a repair into a replacement.
Watch for these signs: ice on the rear panel, weak cooling in the refrigerator, a compressor that runs too long, water under the crisper drawers, or a freezer that never completes a defrost cycle.
