I went to Mansfield in Grade 6 back in 2016 and it was truly the best overnight field trip of my entire school experience. Being there felt like stepping into a completely different world. The green space is so beautiful and secluded from everything else, and the whole area has such a cozy small town vibe. It was the perfect break from the city and suburbs and made it easy to slow down and really enjoy the moment.
We went in the late spring around April or May, so the weather was great and everything was green and full of life. We spent our days hiking, exploring the trails, and doing tons of outdoor activities. The barn was one of the most memorable parts of the trip and we were always doing something new, so it never felt boring.
The cabins, washrooms, and shower facilities were all very clean and well kept, which is honestly impressive for a place that hosts so many school groups. Even the food was amazing, which is not something you usually hear about on school trips.
One of my favourite memories was when our teachers had a full on Running Man dance battle. Another highlight was the bonfire night where we roasted marshmallows together. It was such a wholesome moment that really brought everyone closer, even though I definitely came home with a lot of mosquito bites, which felt like a rite of passage for being out in nature.
We were not allowed to bring electronics, which at the time felt like a punishment, but looking back it made the trip so much better. We were actually present with each other, talking, laughing, and making real memories instead of staring at screens. That is one of the reasons I really want to visit again now as an adult.
Our trip lasted three days and two nights and our elementary school even received an award or plaque along with several other schools, which made the experience even more meaningful. I am not sure how things changed after COVID or if trips like this still happen, but I really hope they do because this place deserves to be experienced by new generations of students.
I do not even have pictures from the trip, but the memories are permanently etched into my brain. So many of us who went are now graduating from university, finishing college, in skilled trades, or starting full time jobs this year. It has been almost ten years and it honestly feels unreal that we were little kids back then and now we are adults. Time really flies, but Mansfield will always have a special place in my heart and I cannot wait to visit again someday. 😊
