When our waste discharge backed up, I looked on local social media to find a plumber. Dutton Plumbing had an extremely high number of five star reviews, so I sent them a message. Nick came out the next morning and, after spending a while in the crawl space, emerged with a set of photos which led him to the tentative conclusion that the back up was in the exterior waste discharge pipe between the house and the sewer. He recommended using a pressure jet to attempt to clear the clog and a video probe to inspect afterward. I approved that procedure and the next day, Gavin came and performed these procedures. Unfortunately, the video feed showed what Nick had deduced, the clog was exterior of the house, and worse yet, it was not a clog, but was a deformed pipe. The only "cure" was a new pipe. Gavin assured us that the existing pipe would serve, albeit at a reduced flow. We could shower and use the toilets, but should forgo things like washing machines.
All this happened just before Thanksgiving. Dutton arranged for expedited buried utility marking and on Monday morning, Gavin and a small crew arrived with a backhoe. They did a careful dig and worked steadily all day on a very cold day.
Late in the day, the ditch filled in, Dutton gave us the green light to resume full use again.
Throughout the process, each step was fully explained, complete with associated costs.
I will confess I was surprised how expensive the excavation was, but believe it was fair and equitable.
I've got Dutton Plumbing's number in my Contacts and will call them next time I need a plumber.
