I’ll start off by saying that I would likely stay here again despite the flaws. But there are several. As others have pointed out, though advertised as a five star hotel, it is clearly not. The Four Seasons and other truly five star hotels in the area charge more than $1200 per night so at this price point in Mexico City, four stars would be appropriate.
The best thing about this place are the rooms. They are beautifully appointed and if you get a room in the back of the hotel (rooms ending in 01 to 04), it is actually very quiet considering you’re in one of the largest cities in the world. The location is perfect and the staff is very friendly. The beds were exceptionally comfortable, and there is a lovely kitchenette.
Now for the quirks. As noted by other travelers, the breakfast situation is a joke. It’s on an open terrace so in the winter is quite chilly first thing in the morning. You get one cup of coffee, a bowl of oatmeal, and a pastry. Anything more than that and you must pay, and they’re not very clear about charging you for the extra cup of coffee or whatever. Seems like a pennypinching maneuver that only upsets guest guests expecting a luxury experience. Second, there are no robes which again seems like an odd way to try and save money. Lastly, the bathroom window in the outer units is a swiveling piece of wood and not in a sealed frame, so cold air comes through in the winter, and I would suppose hot air in the summer. It’s a strange architectural detail that makes the rooms less comfortable. In addition, the wood is coated with creosote, so the bathroom smells like toxic chemicals.
It just seems that the management is a bit out of touch with providing an excellent customer experience.
One final thing, our third night there the batteries in the smoke alarm ran out and we heard a slow beeping for half the night. Don’t they change them once a year or do they wait for guests to be awakened in the middle of the night before replacing them? Weird. We asked for a discount due to a poor night’s sleep, and they comped us for the extra coffee we had at breakfast that we didn’t know we had to pay for.
